2D 1N @ Penang Food Trip ~ Part 1/2

PENANG DAY 1~

Whenever we think about food paradise is always end up in Penang. Recently, I went to Penang with a friend of mine (little devil) as we both craving for some GOOD food. Since we both off on a weekday and have nothing else to do therefore we decided! Go Penang Makan-makan~
We meet up at Masjid Jamek LRT station in the morning, as we both come from different direction and we drop of at Plaza Rakyat LRT station and walk to Puduraya to get the bus ticket to Penang.

An old building nearby the Masjid Jamek Star LRT

The bus ticket to Penang cost RM35/pax one way. After bought the bus ticket we had decided to have breakfast in Puduraya. Since we only have around half an hour for breakfast so we had decided to have the Fastest Breakfast @ Marrybrown Fast Food. Desperate that I am kinda hungry, so I had order the meal of 2 pcs of chicken (look like KFC snack plate).

My heavy breakfast

Since they just opened and the serving is quite hot, somehow is taste so nice. I suddenly like Marrybrown more then KFC due to they serve salad instead of coleslaw. I am wondering also whether KFC and Marrybrown, which one is cheaper. The above set is RM10.10. The only thing disappointed there is the WIFI is not working?!
The journey by bus to Penang is taken around 5 hours depend on the bus speed and whether they stop for break or stop at Butterworth first then only to Sg Nibong bus terminal. We bought the bus ticket to Sg Nibong bus terminal instead of Butterworth. If you bought a bus ticket to Butterworth then you need to take the ferry to Penang Island. I rather go though the penang bridge as I am too lazy to wait and take the ferry to cross.

Wow, that is Komtar

Penang Bridge

Finally, reach Penang after the long journey in the bus. We drop off at Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal and waited for the bus to Komtar, Georgetown. We waited around 15min and taken the Rapid bus no.101 to Komtar and the fare is RM2/pax. Somehow I think is reasonable instead taking a taxi which will cost me more than RM15 to komtar, I rather take bus and have some sight seeing.

Is the same bus like the one in KL

The bus ticket

The bus will stopping nearby Komtar Terminal, next to 1st Avenue Shopping centre and he will shout to inform you, Komtar komtar! Once we reach Georgetown, first thing to do is hunt for a place to stay for the night. We walk to Jalan Penang from Komtar, and found a simple guest house for 2 pax at RM45 per night with attached bathroom. I always ask to view the room before the decided to stay in to make sure is clean and comfortable. After check-in, we decided walk around to start hunting for food.

Police Station

Temple Prayer

The nine god last day prayer

We suppose to hunt for food but due to the nice scenery, we end up walking and sight-seeing instead. When we reach Burma Street, I just realise that the Nine God Prayer is on going and the street facing the temple selling all sort of vegetarian food and lots of people too. I am not really a fan for vegetarian so too bad...

 Gurney Drive

As we can't decide what and where to eat, so we taken a bus to Gurney Drive as it been said the place which have variety of famous food there. The first food that come to our mind when we reach here is Penang Famous Char Koay Teow.

The only stall selling char koay teow on that day

Char Koay Teow

Believe me, I kinda disappointed with the char koay teow, not really nice and is kinda expensive also. This small plate of fried noodle cost RM5?! even more expensive than the one I had in KL. Nothing special also and don't have 'kerang' on it... sad...

Asam Laksa

This bowl of asam laksa cost RM3.50, nothing special and the prawn sauce had added in the soup so can't really taste. Since is small bowl, I think it finished in less than 5 minute. Might be I am hungry too.

Penang Rojak (The rojak sauce is nice)

Oh Jian (Oyster omelet)

The small pate of Rojak cost RM4 and contain fruits and yellow squid. As for the Oyster omelet cost RM6 and the taste is ok but I think they very generous in giving so much spring onion.

Our dinner

All the food here is self service as the crowd is kinda heavy during dinner time approaching. Means, you order then wait then pay and bring ur own food to the table. the seat is very limited and you will see lots people would either take out or waiting for your table.

The queue for the char koay teow

Mua chi @ RM2 - not bad

Gurney Drive at nite

Lucky we finished our meal before the rain approaching. While walking to the bus stop I can see there are people still coming to have they dinner there, just wondering how they going to eat with the rain? We taken the bus back to Penang Street and it took around 20 minute due to the rain and we are super lucky as the rain stopped once we reach Georgetown.

The rain stopped

This is really a hotel???

Since rain stopped and there is still some space in the stomach so we take a walk as they is a very famous wan tan mee in Lebuh Chulia. Therefore, we walk around to look for the Wan Tan Mee Stall. Not sure what is the name but it super famous as we found it on the free map taken by my friend in 1st Avenue shopping centre.

Penang Lobak

Found the Famous Wan Tan Mee

The Lobak cost RM8 kinda expensive and the sauce not nice also. I had order a watermelon juice too and it only cost RM1.50 consider cheap. The Wan Tan Mee stall only open at nite from 8:30pm till 12:30pm, and believe me lots people ordering and you might have to wait at least 15min. The Wan Tan Mee taste so nice as the noodle so tender and not over cook, the char siew and wan tan is just ok. The best thing about this Wan Tan Mee is only cost RM2.80?! Super Cheap!!!

Soup Kambing

We ended the food hunt with Soup Kambing from Soup Hameed restaurant, my favourite all time soup... my friend order a roti canai and a Limau Ais. Total cost for the bill is RM8.70 since the soup kambing it self already cost RM6 kinda expensive but since I like lamb so is ok.

After having so much of food it make me kinda sleepy and once we reach the hotel, we slept soundly may be due to the food or tired since we been walking for almost half a day.

Cendol Bakar @ Kuala Selangor

Last weekend, we had decided to Bukit Melawati @ Kuala Selangor. The journey take about an hour, so is kinda boring sitting on the car and looking around the view of Highway, Trees and Sky. Suddenly, the sentences of word catch my eyes and it written; 'Cendol Bakar Drive-Thru'. It really an eyes catching with the sign and more surprise me more is the queue and popularity if this place. Somehow we turn back and joining the queue of the drive-thru, however after 5 minutes and the queue not moving and we decided to park our car and enjoy the cendol.

As seen, the queue is super long for either drive-thru or dinning there. I had queued for around 25 minute standing and getting hungry as I just had light lunch, since we planning to have seafood dinner there. However, after looking at the Nasi Lemak there, is really tempting me as it wrap in banana leaves and is only RM2.50 therefore, I decided to try the 'Nasi Lemak Sotong'.

I had ordered the Cendol VIP and Cendol Tapai, since that is the only items available from the menu.
Our total bill end up is RM9.80 for 2 Nasi Lemak (Sotong & Ayam) and 2 Cendol. I was serve by a very young small boy and he a bit slow, can see that he is either just helping his family or part time school boy hired by the owner.

Since the place is full with people, we quickly grab a sit and start eating. Half way eating then I just realise they forget to give me CENDOL, in both cendol we had ordered. Haiz... Kinda disappointed, since the queue is so long and the staff are all too busy, so we don't bother to complain. However, I like the Nasi Lemak, it taste nice and not too spicy too. The serving is quite big with lots squid, for the price we are paying it worth.

Nasi Lemak Ayam

Nasi Lemak Sotong

The squid might not able to see from the picture, but believe me, it quite a lots and the only thing are bad about the nasi lemak is not hot. If they can serve it hot, I think it would been perfect! Anyway, the Cendol I find it nothing special (nothing burn also) and I think don't mind to try again if I pass by there on the weekday which with less people and definitely Not Weekend!!!
